Some of the “Government Shutdown” effects.

Please share this!
- National Organic Standards Program staff furloughed. (Overseers that make sure your organic food is actually organic)
- Department of Homeland Security will stop civil liberties complaint lines, investigation, and training.
- Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau won’t accept new applications. (New distilleries, breweries, and wineries won’t open)
- NASA.gov is offline.
- Businesses that operate on federally managed lands or public parks, such as privately owned campgrounds, concession stands, and tour companies, will close.
- 24 American war cemeteries will close.
- The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, will be back burnered.
- The Department of Agriculture will not operate its 25 year old “Meat and Poultry Hotline.”
- Most research activities at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will go dark. (Those agencies study topics including long-term climate change. Real-time hurricane and flight-planning will still be available)
- No one from the Office of the Pardon Attorney will be available should President Obama want to issue a presidential pardon.
- The Department of Transportation will not drug test its employees.
- Charges of on-the-job discrimination complaints will not be investigated.
- No one will advise the government on “matters pertaining to the arts.”
- E-Verify will go offline. (More than 400,000 employers use the system to check their employees’ immigration and eligibility status)
- The U.S. Coast Guard will delay licenses for both recreational and for-profit boaters.
The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement will stop monitoring coal mines, except in an emergency or if there is a complaint.
- Scientific advisory committee that monitors whale safety, will shutter all operations, except for a few members appointed by the president who will watch for emergencies.
- If shutdown last 2-3 weeks, 3.6 million veterans will not receive their benefits.
- The CDC will halt its flu program. (Every fall, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitors the spread of flu and figures the best way to direct vaccine programs around the country. The CDC also has to stop providing “support to state and local partners for infectious disease surveillance.” And the Agency will have a “significantly reduced capacity to respond to outbreak investigations, processing of laboratory samples, and maintaining the agency’s 24/7 emergency operations center”)
- After a week of shutdown, Department of Agriculture will stop supporting the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. (Which helps pregnant women and new moms buy healthy food and provides nutritional information and health care referrals to those who need it. 9 million Americans will be affected)
- The Small Business Administration will halt its services. (It has provided about $106 billion in loans to more than 193,000 small businesses over the last 4 years. It also runs programs to help small firms win government contracts, help veteran-owned businesses, and boost international trade)
- Head Start Programs will slowly start closing. (There are about 1,600 Head Start Programs that provide education, nutrition and health, and other services to 1 million low-income children and families. Initially only 20 programs are affected, but over time all will be)
- During shutdown, the Social Security administration won’t have enough staff to schedule new hearings for those applying for disability benefits.
- The National Institutes of Health will turn away roughly 200 patients each week from its clinical research center, including cancer patients.
